Uganda Golf Union (UGU) has put in place a regulation to ensure actual geographical representation in the 2012 Inter-regional Golf Championship that tees off in Entebbe on Friday.

UGU secretary Johnson Omollo reminded teams yesterday to feature at least two players from each of the clubs in their region.

“The regional character should be reflected in the composition of the teams. This tournament must eventually have a national outlook. Preparations for the teams are in high gear and the level of competition is expected to be high as usual,” Omollo remarked.

Previously, teams would be dominated by players from Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja.

The two-day event that features Northern, Buganda, Western and defending champions Eastern will be played on medal format.

“Handicaps don’t lie. You have to prove that you as good as your handicap,” Omollo explained.

Various teams went into residential camp in Entebbe over the weekend and will stay there until the tournament ends on Saturday.

The event precedes the Uganda Open due next week at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.

Meanwhile, Eastern Region coach Deo Akope (left), eager to keep a title the team won for the first time last year, plans to field players familiar with the Entebbe course in the annual tournament that tees off on Friday.

“It’s a tough course for everybody. I am unlikely to field many people from Kampala because the course is difficult for those who rarely play in Entebbe,” Akope told New Vision.

“Upcountry people can handle Entebbe and we are required to have players in Eastern Uganda representedin the team.”

Emma Ogwang, Tony Kisadha, Patrick Mwaka, Frank Operemo are likely to catch Akope’s eye given their familiarity with the Entebbe course.

Eva Magala, Bridget Basiima, Lydia Nantaba, Rose Azuba and Petra Nalwoga are female competitors most likely to be selected in Akope’s team of 24.

Akope has singled out Western region as the team to beat.
