Museveni directs on Kanungu schools, hospital

KIRUHURA - President Yoweri Museveni met over 100 women from Kanungu district under their umbrella body, UWESO, at his country home in Rwakitura on Wednesday.

The group, led by Kanungu district Woman MP Elizabeth Karungi, gave their host several gifts and also thanked him for ensuring peace and security in the country.

During the visit, the Uganda Women’s Efforts to Save Orphans tabled demands for immediate rehabilitation of the Bwindi community hospital, which Museveni pledged to work on through the ministry of health.

But the president made it clear that unless people engage in income-generating enterprises, they cannot benefit from infrastructure “if you are poor”.

“You must have enterprises that can enable you earn some money like growing fruits, coffee, poultry, keeping that you can sell and get some income,” he told the women.

The presidential special assistant on communication, Sarah Kagingo, said Museveni directed his staff to follow up on the issue of two buses government pledged to Kihihi High School and Bishop Comboni College in Kambuga, Kanungu district.

MP Karungi urged the president to push for the opening up of a road between Rubuguri in Kisoro and Buhoma in Kanungu that goes around the national park.

This, she said, will enable tea farmers between the two biggest factories to transport their produce faster.

At the end of the meeting – which had seen the Woman MP take to the floor and dance before the president – Museveni made a general call to women to avoid land fragmentation.

He also advised those with little land to exploit it by investing in high-value crops like coffee and fruits for food and income.
