PRINCIPAL Judge Yorokamu Bamwine has advised magistrates in the country to avoid being “terrorists” to the public when doing their judicial duties in their courts.
Bamwine also urged the magistrates to be time cautious and avoid corrupt tendencies if they are to succeed in their work.
He also urged them to do their work diligently and use their judicial powers responsibly, because by becoming magistrates, they are not different and they are still human beings.
Bamwine, who was flanked by the Chief Registrar Paul Wolimbwa Gadenya, was yesterday officially commissioning into the judicial system two additional Grade One Magistrates Grace Richard Ssemaganda and Setrina Kyomugisha at his chambers at the High Court in Kampala.
Ssemaganda and Kyomugisha bring the total number of Grade One Magistrates to 127.
Bamwine urged the magistrates further to respect their seniors and take their judicial oaths seriously.
They should stay sober at all times even after a glass of wine.
They should not give the public a chance to cry foul by delivering half-baked judgments. “Do justice to all manner of people,” he urged further.
Gadenya revealed that in the long term the Judiciary aims at having a total of 250 magistrates in order to satisfy the public demand.
However, between now and the next five years, the Judiciary should be having 150 Grade One Magistrates; that would bring the ration of 300 cases per a judicial officer as optimum.
