Two Ugandan boxers one win away from medals in Glasgow

Boxers Juma Kaggwa and Bashir Nasir are each just a fight away from Commonwealth medals.

Wins on Wednesday will have them assured of bronze, Uganda’s first boxing medals at the quadrennial games since Martin Mubiru won bronze in Melbourne in 2006.

Kaggwa, who outclassed Zambia’s Bwalya Lumbwe at the previous stage, takes on Ghana’s Tetteh Sulemanu while Nasir faces England’s Michael Conlan.

“I am critically studying their opponents. It’s not going to be easy but we are also seriously preparing,” stated coach Dick Katende.

As Kaggwa and Nasir will be unleashing punches, another Ugandan medal prospect will also be busy on track.

National 800m record holder Winnie Nanyondo will be busy at Hampden Park stadium. Nanyondo who is enjoying superb form should easily advance to tomorrow’s semi-final.

The day’s program in athletics winds up with the men’s 800m semi-finals where Ronald Musagala, like club-mate Nanyondo, will be seriously working towards a medal.

Uganda’s lone weightlifter Becky Namusoke will also be in action today. She will be competing in the 75 kilogram category.

In badminton, the Ugandan pair of Edwin Ekiring and Wilson Tukire takes on New Zealand. Margaret Nankabirwa and Daisey Nakalyango will thereafter face England in the women’s doubles.

Table tennis will have doubles’ action.
