Minister Kutesa meets Indian Premier Modi

The foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa is leading a delegation on cabinet ministers and government officials on a five-day official trade mission to India.

The delegation includes ministers John Nasasira (ICT), Ruth Nankabirwa (fisheries), Ajedra Gabriel Aridru (Investments) and other senior officials from government.

A statement from the Indian ministry of external affairs said, “The visit of Kutesa will give a new impetus to further progress of India-Uganda relations.”

While meeting the recently elected Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Monday, Kutesa delivered felicitations from President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni on his recent electoral victory.

Modi accepted an invitation to visit Uganda although no specific date has been set yet. 

He underlined the potential for cooperation between the two countries in the fields of investment, ICT, hydropower among others.

According to the Indian press, Kutesa expressed Uganda's desire to build on excellent relations between the two countries, whether bilaterally or at multilateral platforms, by working with the new Government of India.

Modi also extended an invitation to President Museveni to attend the upcoming 3rd India-Africa Forum Summit that will be held in India later this year.

The Indian premier congratulated Kutesa on his recent election to the UN General Assembly presidency. 

He expressed confidence that issues of interest to the developing world would receive special attention during Kutesa’s presidency.

Minister Kutesa is expected to hold talks with the Indian External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on a range of issues relating to bilateral trade and Information Technology.

According to the Indian ministry of commerce, the volume of trade between Uganda and India stands at US$450 million, with India exporting to Uganda goods worth US$430 million while Uganda exports US$25 million worth of goods to India.
