A sh472m water project intended to provide water to over 5000 people has been commissioned at Kisozi trading centre in Kamuli district.

The water project was funded by the Kamuli district local government under the rural growth center piped water program.

The program will draw quality water and sanitation facilities closer to rural areas in the district.

According to Kamuli district Chief Administrative Officer Cuthbert Esoku, 30 families have been connected with water in the first phase of the project.

Two hundred more households will be connected to the water grid. Esoku also requested for an additional shs169m to connect the water to the 200 households.

He said the Kisozi rural growth centre piped water supply project started in the financial year 2008/2009 after the directorate of water development of ministry of water and environment handed over a production borehole in Kisozi to the district.

Esoku said the design of the water supply system was undertaken by BIDCO Investments Ltd.

Due to limited resources available, the project was implemented in two phases.

Phase I comprised of the ground water abstraction, transmission line and elevated water tank reservoir and Phase II was for water distribution network.

The initially designed 10.5km water distribution network was reduced to 4.95km under phase II, which also included construction of two public stand posts and 30 yard connections.

The entire water supply project has been completed at a cost of shs472m and was handed over to the water supply board to manage and maintain it.

Esoku revealed that Kamuli district will give an annual water grant of shs3m to the water supply board to manage and maintain the water source.

Commissioning the project on mid-week, the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga said the piped water will help in preventing water born diseases among residents since it is clean and safe to be drunk.

“My worry has been women who are battered by their husbands after spending longer hours at water sources and come back home in the night, but now that the water is in the trading centre, this is going to stop,” Kadaga said.

She cautioned the water supply board against overcharging residents, adding that water should be affordable to the public at a subsidized price.

The Speaker further revealed that Kamuli district Local Council received road equipment unit from central government which included.

The equipment included two tipper trucks, two graders and two motorcycles, and more.
