The Uganda Police Force is set to open up plantations to grow food crops as a solution to the meagre pay given to its officers and as a way of alleviating the effects of inflation.

The Inspector General of Police, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura, said the programme will be akin to what was done during scarcity of basic goods under the UNLF government when government vehicles would get food from upcountry to mitigate shortages.

“Our personnel are having it rough,” Kayihura told MPs on the defence and internal affairs committee chaired by Simon Mulongo (NRM).

“We want to see if we can bring food at subsidised prices. We want to establish supermarkets for the Police where we sell at subsidised prices,” Kayihura added. Kayihura appeared before the MPs to defend his department’s budget.
