The Commonwealth Games rugby sevens again proved to be dizzy heights for Uganda.

The Cranes were overrun 43-5 by Australia then 40-0 by  England before consoling themselves  with a 17-14 win over lowly Sri Lanka in a packed Ibrox stadium.

Tolbert Onyango’s side thus failed to advance to the main medal knock-out stage and had to settle for the bowl race.

They face Malaysia in the quarter final of the bowl competiton Sunday.

Emmanuel Ecodu got Uganda’s lone try in the opening match. The Kampala architect was again on the score sheet in the Sri Lanka match together with Michael Wokorach, Benon Kizza and James Ilungat.

Uganda faced similar opposition at the last games in India losing 33-0 and 55-0 by England. Consolation that time came in a 35-15 win over Sri Lanka.

The sevens are  a small-sided version of the 15-man game with  seven players per team. There are 16 teams, split into four groups.

Matches are split into two seven-minute halves with the scoring system identical to XVs (tries - five points, penalty/drop goal - three, conversion - two). The sport will make its Olympic debut in Rio in 2016.
