Makerere University has agreed to pay staff allowance arrears for the month of May, amounting to sh3.7b.
In a meeting between the executive the three staff associations led by Dr Muhammad Kiggundu, it was resolved that the money would be wired to the respective accounts of members of staff on Friday. The meeting was held at the university on Thursday.
This leaves the university with staff allowance arrears for the month of June, totaling to sh3.7b. Further, the staff have not received their allowance for this month.
According to Kiggundu, it was also resolved that the specifics of paying the remaining staff allowance arrears would be discussed in the next sitting of the University Council, Makerere’s supreme governing body.
The university has called off a council session initially scheduled for today to discuss the grievances of the students’ guild against the 10% tuition fees increment for incoming freshmen.
Makerere’s leadership is yet to reschedule the council session.
