Terror threat still high, more vigilance needed - Police

Two years after the bomb attacks that claimed over 80 people in Kampala on July 11 2010, Police has warned that the terrorism threat is still a major security concern in Uganda.

Police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi on Tuesday issued a statement urging the public to be alert and look out for suspected terrorists.

“Security agencies have increased foot and motorized patrols and general vigilance to prevent any possible terrorist attack,” he said, maintaining that also vigilance from the public among other things is key.

 Mugenyi who described the fight against terrorism as a social responsibility that calls for collective efforts, noted that physical security measures alone, cannot exhaustively and effectively fight terrorism.

He cautioned the public to be suspicious of unexpected gifts, abandoned bags, polythene bags (buveera), suitcases, briefcases, suspiciously parked motor vehicles and watches.

Also strange wires loosely attached to doors, windows of houses or motor vehicles ought not to be overlooked, he said.

Last week, Police stepped up security at all police units and places of worship following the apparent change of tactics by terrorists in light of the recent attacks on churches in Kenya.

With the new measures,, places of worship are among others supposed to have  metal detecting walk-throughs or hand detectors to guarantee safety of worshippers.
