Three Asians were on Friday expelled from Mubende town council for failing to produce valid documents like work permits, trading licences and visas.

The operation that was conducted by Mubende town council officials followed complaints about the increasing number of Asians in the town.

“Security agents have been asking us to provide details of the Asians doing business in our town but we had none. We wrote to them two weeks ago asking for the documents, but they stubbornly refused,” Moses Ssempa, the town clerk of Mubende town council,  said.

A few of the Asians have been running supermarkets, while others had small retail shops.
The three expelled Asians had arrived in Uganda in April on a three-month visa, which prohibited them from working in Uganda.

They were Patel Vijay of R.K. and Sons Investments, Kurji Jitendra and Dinar Singh.
Ten other Asians were suspended from operating their businesses and given three days to present valid documents.
Ssempa said: “Some of them have photocopies of passports which are not clear. They will not re-open their businesses until we certify their documents.”

On Friday afternoon, some of the Asians asked the town council officials to reopen their premises and allow them to remove the merchandise.

Ssempa, however, said he would refer the matter to the Police for further investigations.
