NAMBOOLE - A group of students from Nabisunsa Girls School celebrated the 96th birthday of fallen anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela at Namboole Stadium on Friday.

The stadium, which hosts several sporting events and other kinds of activity, was named after the former South African president, and is often referred to as Mandela national stadium.

Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island, died in December last year after a long spell of illness.

He is admired for his struggles to unite the people of South Africa and the group of Nabisunsa students traveled all the way to Namboole stadium to relive memories of the great leader.

The chairman of Always Be Tolerant (ABETO), Moses Musana, also visited the stadium where he pointed out that the government has not done enough in taking care of the facility.

His suggestion is that its name be changed to Mandela memorial stadium.

The ABETO chairman also talked of the need to have “another Mandela”.

He said: ““When Mandela died, the President of America Barack Obama said that no African president would fit in his shoes. We should search for another Mandela.”

He also said Uganda is scheduled to host a memorial lecture where the President of Chile Michellie Bachelet is expected to attend as chief guest next month, adding that “there is need to have a legacy  of remembering the good work done by Mandela”.

Mandela visited Uganda in the 1990s and was hosted by President Yoweri Museveni

Among the places the world icon visited was the stadium that was named after him
