The minister of state for primary education Kamanda Bataringaya has said Government will as earlier planned increase teachers' salaries by 15% in the forthcoming 2012/2013 financial year budget.

"I want to clarify on what the President said on salary increment. The President never said that you teachers are not important. It will be another category of the civil servants to wait as the resource envelop grows," he said.

Addressing teachers of Buhinga Primary School in Fort Portal municipality, Kabarole district, Bataringaya said the salary increment for all teachers was agreed upon and that Government is to omplement it now.

The minister appealed to the teachers to continue providing services for a better Uganda to ensure that children have quality education.

"As Government we value you teachers because you are the foundation of development. If you were not taught, you would not also be teaching so continue teaching these children because they are the leaders of tomorrow," Bataringaya said.

The head teacher of the school John Tinka Byamukama urged Government to look into the problems affecting schools which he said also contribute to poor academic performance.

"Our request is that Government increases the universal primary school funds that are too little given the inflation and also improve on the school infrastructures because some of them were built by the Asians in the 1950s," Tinka told the minister.
