Thirty-five High Court judges and senior practicing lawyers have been nominated for consideration to be appointed to the Court of Appeal.

According to the Uganda Law Society president, James Mukasa Ssebugenyi, there are eight slots to be filled at the Court of Appeal bench.

Some of the shortlisted candidates applied for appointment, but a number of them were simply nominated by other people, who believed that they are competent and fit to serve on the bench.

The Judicial Service Commission, about two months ago ran an advertisement seeking applicants to fill vacant judicial posts. Last week, the commission recruited 39 Grade One magistrates.

Ssebugenyi has sent out a communication to the members to give information about the suitability of the shortlisted candidates.

“Members, this is a serious matter requiring serious input and objective and candid comments, which will be compiled into a confidential report to be availed by me, your president, to the Judicial Service Commission,” said Mukasa Ssebugenyi.

The shortlist includes 15 High Court judges, one retired judge and other big names in the legal profession.
