MEMBERS of Parliament have written to President Yoweri Museveni asking him to consider resigning from office within 60 days to avoid being impeached.

Aruu MP, Odonga Otto and Kyadondo east MP, Ibrahim Semujju Nganda both of (FDC) said the impeachment process had started with collection of signatures aimed at removing Museveni from office under Article 107 of the Constitution.

In their letter dated May 16 they accuse him of abuse of office, misconduct and for doing acts which are prejudicial and inimical to the security and to the economy of Uganda. A copy of the letter indicates that it was received on the same day.

The letter was copied to the Vice President, the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Justice, among others.

In April, a group of seven opposition MPs led by Otto and Rubaga south MP, Ken Lukyamuzi initiated a motion to impeach Museveni, saying he had failed in his constitutional obligations.

They said there were a number of grounds on which the President ought to be held personally liable. The other MPs were Nganda, Wafula Oguttu, Bernard Atiku, Deogratius Kiyingi and Joseph Ssewungu.

The Government dismissed the move as mere politicking calculated to embarrass the President.
