Good quality journalism in Uganda is under threat because media houses lack adequate financial resources to cover news events.

New Vision editor John Kakande said: “The threat to press freedom is the fact that quality journalism is expensive.

No media house can afford to do quality journalism without resources.”

He said a number of media houses, including the large media companies, operate on small budgets and have few financial resources to invest in quality journalism. Kakande made the remarks yesterday during a media dialogue organized by the Uganda Media Development Foundation to mark the World Press Freedom Day.

The dialogue aimed at reflecting on issues affecting the media industry. It was held at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala and was attended by media professionals.

Lynn Najjemba of PANOS East Africa said practitioners in rural areas work in appalling conditions compared to their urban-based colleagues.
