Workers' MP Dr. Sam Lyomoki has been arrested as he tried to hold a rally at the Constitutional Square in Kampala. He is now detained at the Central Police Station.

This after police warned trade union leaders and workers MPs against holding a parallel Labor Day meeting in Kampala.

The main celebrations to mark Labour Day are taking place in the northern district of Gulu. President Yoweri  Museveni is the chief guest.

Workers MP Dr. Sam Lyomoki said they would meet at the Constitutional Square to protest government’s failure to address issues that affect Uganda labor force.

The meeting is supposed to be attended by different Labour Union members countrywide to protest against what they call exploitation of employees and unfair treatment of labour

Police have heavily deployed at the constitutional square ahead of the planned meeting.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Ibin Senkumbi said workers will not be allowed to meet at Constitutional Square because it’s in the central business district.

He said meetings of that nature should be held at Kololo ceremonial grounds but Lyomoki insisted that the issues to be discussed are constitutional.

He said with or without police permission, they will hold the meeting.
