The Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has said the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government cannot be overthrown through riots like it has been done to governments in some African countries.

Mbabazi said because people in countries like Tunisia and Egypt went on the streets and overthrew their governments during the popular Arab Spring, some people thought it would be a similar situation in Uganda and would get NRM out of power in a similar move.

Speaking in Runyankole Rukiga [local dialect], Mbabazi said people who think the NRM government can be overthrown through riots “do not know what they are talking about.”

“Shun them because Uganda is stable and peaceful,” the PM said.

He described the Action for Change (A4C) group as a problem that the country has, adding that some individuals in the group are bandits who were rejected during the elections but have continued to destabilize the people’s peace.

“I am always asking them, who are they to refuse what Ugandans have decided?” Mbabazi said.

Mbabazi who is Kinkizi West MP and NRM party secretary general, was officiating at Kakoni Catholic Church’s function to raise funds for completing the church construction in Kyamuhunga sub- county in Bushenyi district.

The minister for information and national guidance Mary Karooro Okurut and about 30 MPs attended the fundraising event that was organized by the area MP (Igara West) Raphael Magezi.

Earlier, Mbabazi made stop-overs in Kizinda, Kigoma and Butare trading centres where he addressed people under a downpour.  At Kigoma, he commissioned a powerline project.

‘Kony never to return’

During the event Mbabazi also asked the public not to believe what they hear about Joseph Kony, saying there is no way Kony will make it back to Uganda alive because the UPDF chased him up to Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and that the forces are still pursuing him in the Central African Republic where he is hiding.

The PM’s assurance to the people was clear: “We are not going to get tired until we get him to face charges against atrocities he committed against Ugandans.”

He said Government has designed strategies to fight poverty, which he said have already been explained to all district leaders.

He hailed church leaders for the role they have played in guiding people on issues of education and health.

“I am where I am because of church,” he noted.  Mbabazi said religious leaders have walked an extra mile and done what government is supposed to have done.

During the Sunday event at the church, over sh40m in cash and pledges was raised.
