Police officer killed in city riots, Besigye arrested

A Police officer has been killed in city riots, Police Spokesperson Judith Nabakoba has confirmed.

An assistant inspector of Police attached to Kafumbe Mukasa Road Police post In Kampala has been killed in city riots, Police Spokesperson Judith Nabakoba has confirmed.

The Police officer identified as Assistant Inspector of Police Ariongo John Bosco, aged 48 died instantly when unidentified people reportedly hit him with a rock, shattering his head.

The officer had been deployed as part of an operation to ensure the maintenance of public order during a procession in down town Kampala led by opposition leader,  Dr Kizza Besigye.

"Uganda Police Force with regret confirms that a police officer was killed in a violent assembly at Kampala Road this afternoon," Nabakoba said.

Nabakoba said investigations are at a very early stage but that Police is determined to bring those responsible for the death of their colleague to justice.

Meanwhile Police is holding  Besigye in an unknown location.

He was arrested along Kampala Road by the Kampala Metropolitan Police commander, Andrew Kaweesi, who bundled him onto a Police car and drove off at breakneck speed.

Besigye was heading to Arua Park after his brief visit to St. Balikuddembe Market in downtown Kampala.

Others arrested and detained at the Central Police Station include Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kampala woman MP Nabilah Sempala and Kawempe Municipality Mayor Mubarak Munyagwa.
