Kyambogo University students are grappling with water shortage for the last three weeks.

During the launch of the university’s guild presidential campaigns at the university, Jeremiah Bamutta one of the candidates said that they have spent three weeks without water since National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) disconnected the university over non-payments.

“The university that has a population of 25,000 students has been depending on rain water for the past weeks. The situation is alarming” Bamutta noted.

He noted that the university’s water reservoirs had run dry, including that of the administrative blocks, the kitchen and halls of residence.

Christopher Buni another guild candidate said the university’s sanitation and health services are poor due to the shortage of water.

“Dear fellow students our administration has again come under the spotlight for failing to address the sanitation problems in the university that will lead to loss of lives,” Buni told the students.

He added that most toilets at the campus are blocked.

“We ask the university bosses to get a solution before the situation worsens. We are the majority stakeholders in this university, we cannot continue living in such poor health conditions yet we pay a lot of money,” Buni said.

Paul Kawaga, a guild contender was worried of the poor disposal of garbage in the university and asked the students to unite to keep Kyambogo University clean.

“Garbage is littered on the university compound and some of it is dumped in drainage systems. The garbage skips are filled with garbage which is not collected on time,” Kawaga noted.

Catherine Nambalirwa, a student said, “authorities rarely carry out inspections to ensure the university is clean.”

The university publicity Lawrence Madete said, “We acknowledge the students’ complaints but the administration is working hard towards resolving them.”

The Kyambogo University Guild presidential race has six candidates, including Mushin Nuwagaba, John Mugabi, Benard Cankara, Christopher Buni, Paul Kawaga and Jeremiah Bamutta.
