A brewing row between Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) and a section of drivers could be extinguished soon after dissenting factions appear to walk the peaceful path.

FMU president George Kagimu soon after re-election called for a mutual settlement of disagreements with the drivers led by Ponsiano Lwakataka. The drivers have agreed to to talks that will be held later this week.

“There’s no doubt we are ready to discuss with FMU but the president should change the tone. The amnesty he said he had granted to us was uncalled for. We have done anything wrong to queries things that have gone right. We are ready to talk as long as his tone changes,” Lwakataka told New Vision yesterday.

Ronald Ssebuguzi, the other top driver in Lwakataka’s group, suggested that a mediator should be appointed the meeting should be open to the media.
“We need to have a neutral person to listen to our views which aimed at developing the sport. We also get FMU’s side of the story and come with solution that will help the sport otherwise we can’t continue like this. We need more sponsorship and therefore we have market the sport better instead of relying of gate-collections,” Ssebuguzi argued.

Lwakataka’s group had threatened to boycott FMU sanctioned races this season.
“There is no doubt as drivers we shall get united some day and we shall see what excuse they will give for denying us a voice in the management of the sport,” Ssebuguzi said.
Competitors recently formed Uanda Motor Rally Drivers Club to cater for the interests in the sport.
