THE Police yesterday named the four suspected thugs shot dead on Saturday night in Kyengera.

Among them was a policeman, two army veterans and a boda boda rider.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba identified the dead as Police Constable James Angulu attached to Nsambya Police barracks, Jude Oceli, a boda boda rider at the Mutungo stage, retired Lieutenant Kiiza and retired Warrant Officer Musanje.

The four were gunned down in Kyengera during a fire exchange with plain clothes operatives of the Rapid Response Unit (RRU).

The 10:00pm scuffle opposite Kyengera supermarket on Masaka Road lasted about 10 minutes, according to an eye-witness.

The Police yesterday said they would issue a report on the circumstances surrounding the incident at a later stage.

The bodies were transferred to the city mortuary at Mulago.

The Police on Sunday said they had trailed the thugs in their saloon car for some distance after receiving a tip-off that they planned to rob a supermarket.

“We acted quickly and managed to foil their plans,” the CID director in charge of crime intelligence, Elly Womanya, said.

The Kyengera incident, according to eye-witnesses, was triggered off when Jamil Byekwaso, a policeman, walked over to the four and ordered them out of the car after they got snared in a traffic jam.

Instead the thugs shot him in the knee, prompting another officer in a nearby Police car to open fire at them, plunging the place into chaos as residents scampered for safety.

Nabakooba said yesterday the wounded Policeman was recovering in hospital. The Police recovered a gun while the vehicle was taken to the RRU headquarters in Kireka.
