THE fisheries state minister, Fred Mukisa, has suspended the fishing on Lake George for three months.
He has also called off fishing on Kazinga Channel.

Mukisa, in a letter of January 5 to district chairpersons, said there was a decline in fish stocks in the lake over the last eight years.

He noted that despite the enforcement measures in place, there was little improvement in the fish stocks.
Mukisa called on stakeholders, especially political leaders, to support the measure.

“The minister has directed the complete closure of the lake for a minimum period of three months beginning January to March,” the letter read.

Lake George is shared by Bushenyi, Kasese and Kamwenge districts and has seven landing sites.
