KAMPALA'S skyline will have a new feature when the proposed Rwenzori Towers complex is completed. The investment, which is being undertaken by Pine Investments, is about to kick off, Emma Mbabazi, the firm’s liaison officer, said.
“The contractor is already mobilising and we expect the work to start anytime,†she said on Wednesday.
Mbabazi added that the first phase of the project will involve the building of decks for Rwenzori House and Rwenzori Courts.
The building will have a three-storied parking lot for over 400 cars and about 12,000 square metres of office space and 3,000 of retail business.
Mbabazi pointed out that the project would ease the present parking difficulties experienced by motorists in the central business district.
“This (parking bay) will greatly improve on the parking ratio to the existing buildings and also provide more space for visitors to the Rwenzori complex and the public,†the firm added in a statement. Kampala has an acute shortage of parking bays.
Motorists working within the city centre at times park far from their work premises as the existing parking lots can no longer accommodate the increasing number of vehicles.
The National Environmental Management Authority has already approved the project, whose construction will take 18 months.
The project is funded by the International Finance Corporation, a World Bank subsidiary and a German finance provider, DEG.
