NAKUMATT supermarket has launched a campaign to reduce littering in Kampala by placing litter bins in strategic locations.

The project was launched on Monday by Maria Mutagamba, the Water environment minister, at Nakumatt hypermarket in Kampala.

Mutagamba challenged other companies to emulate Nakumatt’s example and supplement the Government and Kampala City Council (KCC)’s efforts to facilitate environmental conservation.

“Nakumatt has been around for less than a year and I’m informed that they have invested over $2m in specific initiatives that focus on environmental conservation in East Africa,” she said.

“This is a clear indication that the company gives serious priority to cleanliness and the need for a good and health environment,” the minister added. Justus Nyaga, Nakumatt’s advertising co-ordinator, said the supermarket has a policy of extending benefits of environmental conservation to the public in the areas they operate in.

“It’s our responsibility to keep our city and supermarket clean, as we are ISO certified,” Nyaga said.

John Mutenda, the deputy chairman of Kampala central division, blamed Kampalans for being irresponsible and littering the city.
