THE Badminton World Federation has returned German Herbert Ott as the tournament referee for the four international tournaments that Uganda hosts this month.

Norman Katende reports that Ott, who officiated at the Roofings International tournament last year, will be assisted by Uganda’s Harriet Nattabi.

“Nattabi is now an international referee after passing her exams in Mauritius. She will learn many things from Ott,” said the national association chief executive officer Simon Mugabi yesterday.

The tournament will also have Ethiopian Selam Dirma Demisie as one of the umpires, with a host Ugandans.

The local organising committee has also been boosted by financing from Computer Point (sh4m) and Shumuk (sh3m). Britania Products and Uganda Communications Commission, announced their packages earlier.

“We are still waiting for more corporate bodies to honour their promises but we are ready,” said Mugabi.

Uganda will be hosting the Africa Junior championships at the Sharing Youth Centre in Nsambya. The tournament will attract players under the age of 18, battling to qualify for the World Junior and the Singapore Youth Games due later in the year.

Action will then shift to Kabira Club for the continental Thomas and Uber Cup qualifiers.
