Business came to a standstill at Riley Packaging Company in Nama sub-county, Mukono district on Tuesday when employees carried the body of their colleague and dumped it at the company’s gate.

The angry employees, who included the deceased’s son, Godfrey Oduor, accused the company of failing to provide enough funds to transport the body to Busia district for burial.

Peter Oduor, 52, died of diabetes on Saturday at Mukono Health Centre IV and his body had since been lying in the centre mortuary.

Oduor, who was a superviser, had reportedly worked at the firm for four years.

Idi Buto, an employee, said they were forced to carry the body to the company premises to compel management to act.

“When they saw the body, they provided the remaining money for the funeral expenses,” he said.

Oduor’s son said the firm gave them sh1.2m to calm down the situation.

However, the general manager, Vipul Desai, denied that the firm had not provided money for the funeral.

“When we received the news of Oduor’s death, we provided them with money for buying a casket and for transporting the body,” Vipul said.

He said the company usually gives sh500,000 to the relatives of any employee who dies but Oduor’s relatives were given sh750,000.
