Museveni orders probe into Hoima land wrangle

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has ordered for an investigation into the land dispute involving the former Hoima district land board chairman, Yesero Mugenyi, and residents from six villages in Hoima municipality.

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has ordered for an investigation into the land dispute involving the former Hoima district land board chairman, Yesero Mugenyi, and residents from six villages in Hoima municipality.
The investigation follows a petition signed by 30 residents last year appealing to Museveni to intervene in the land row.
The President has tasked the land taskforce to investigate the long-standing dispute between Mugenyi and residents from Kikwite, Butanjwa, Kyakaliba, Kyamatintigiri, Bulera and Kalyabuhire villages.
The chairman of the presidential land taskforce, Maj. Jacob Asiimwe, told the two rivalling parties on Tuesday that his committee would spend three days in the district investigating the wrangle, adding that they would make their findings public.
Asiimwe tasked the resident district commissioner, Martha Asiimwe, to list the people who claim that they are being threatened with eviction by Mugenyi, stating the period they have been on the land.
Mugenyi said the residents who claim that he wants to evict them are not on his land but are instigated by people who want to bring him down by inciting public hatred against him.
Last year, the High Court ordered the Government to compensate Mugenyi for his land where it constructed Bulera Primary Teachers’ College without his consent.
Mugenyi has also dragged Hoima district local government to court for constructing the district block on his land at Kasingo on Hoima-Fort Portal road.
