THE Police yesterday issued traffic guidelines to ensure smooth movement of vehicles when South African President Jacob Zuma commissions Pan African Freedom Square on Queens’ Way in Kampala today.

He will be accompanied by his host, President Yoweri Museveni.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said the road from Katwe to the square will be closed from 2:00pm for one hour.

Motorists from Kibuye roundabout heading to the city centre will be diverted to Mutebi Road to join Ring Road. Mutebi Road will be one-way from Katwe to Ring Road. Traffic heading to Entebbe will not access Queen’s Way.

Motorists will be re-routed at Clock Tower towards Kibuli-Gaba traffic lights then to Nsambya Hospital through Makindye and join the Kampala-Entebbe highway at Najjanankumbi.

Trucks from Masaka Road and Hoima Road will use the Northern Bypass, while vehicles other than those coming from Masaka will go through Kabusu and Nateete to join the city centre via Old Kampala.

Nabakooba advised people with morning flights at Entebbe Airport to travel early to avoid inconveniences.
All invited guests will be availed with parking slots, Nabakooba added.

Zuma is the third South African president to visit Uganda after Thabo Mbeki and Nelson Mandela.

The Pan African Freedom Square is a plot of over an acre located between Queen’s Way and Katwe. It was renovated before the 2007 Commonwealth summit. Representatives of member states planted trees there. A monument was also erected at the square to commemorate CHOGM.
