EDITOR—The launch of the Health and Safety Week and the campaign to wear helmets by boda- boda cyclists was long
overdue! Information and sensitisation of the public, are fundamental in the introduction and implementation of new ideas, laws, etc. It sorts out lack of knowledge, fears and the general apathy of the public!

Luckily, most of the so-called new ideas in Uganda are already standard practice in several other countries, developed and developing. Hence, there is a wealth of experiences to learn from without the need of reinventing the wheel.

In modernisation or development, the public must be sensitised otherwise people would resist, resulting in social, economic and political problems! Helmets will provide safety to the individuals while at the same time boosting the economy if they can be sourced locally!

Similarly, the sanitary sprays (disinfectants) and the disposable linings for the helmets should be locally available. This would solve the biggest health scare attributed to the indiscriminate use of the helmets. Publicity, together with health and safety assurances would make the public ready and willing to use them. This would release the Police to concentrate on other major issues!
