EDITOR—I wish to comment on Dr Olara Otunnu’s ambition for the presidency. Someone has written suggesting that Otunnu needs more time to study Uganda before he can run for the presidency! Otunnu is a senior citizen of Uganda who has served this nation in various capacities even at ministerial level.

He has represented Uganda to the United Nations and was an undersecretary at the UN in charge of children and armed conflict from 1998 to 2005. In all the above cases and others not mentioned here, Otunnu never ceased to be a Ugandan.

He was only a Ugandan living abroad but with contacts in his home country. Anyone who has been keen must have heard him in the international media, particularly on BBC. There are many Ugandans who have been here all their lives but have nothing to offer at all to Uganda or even know what is going on in the country’s politics and economy.

The choice of the UPC delegates should surely be respected. Remember, there were many other candidates some of whom have never left Uganda and have been active politicians but could not match Otunnu’s credentials. It is those who can offer objective and nationalistic leadership who should be voted into office. Otunnu is such a person.
