FEAR gripped residents of Kabembe village, Kyampisi sub-county in Mukono district when unknown people exhumed the remains of a woman who was buried nine years ago.

Sarah Kazibwe’s remains were exhumed on Monday night and fetishes sprinkled on her grave.

Florence Munyango, who first realised that the remains were exhumed, said she had gone to dig when she found the clothes in which Kazibwe was buried on the ground.

“I ran and called other people who were still at home. When we checked the grave nothing was there so we called the resident district commissioner, Maj. David Matovu, for help,” she said.

Munyango said she suspects that traditional healers who ask for skulls from people who go seeking their help might be behind the case.

Kazibwe’s brother, Edward Muyanja, said she was buried in September 2001 and her daughters had just renovated the grave two weeks ago.

Muyanja added that last year his son, Fred Makya’s, remains were also exhumed in the same graveyard. They covered the empty grave after failing to recover the body.

Matovu said they would carry out investigations.

The exhumation of remains has become common in Mukono and Kayunga districts.
