URA has made a good decision on defaulters

EDITOR—I am pleased by the decision of the Uganda Revenue Authority to make public the names of individuals, institutions and firms which have defaulted tax for long. As we engage into a war against corruption, failure to pay tax, especially by institutions, is another form corruption.

EDITOR—I am pleased by the decision of the Uganda Revenue Authority to make public the names of individuals, institutions and firms which have defaulted tax for long. As we engage into a war against corruption, failure to pay tax, especially by institutions, is another form corruption.

All of us know very well that we pay taxes to such firms every time we buy goods or services from them and their failure to remit the taxes remains a big question. Where will the taxpayer not be exploited?

It is unacceptable for companies to refuse to remit taxes because they actually do not pay it by themselves but we do. This has come at a right time when the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament has revealed the list of thieves within the Government.

I call upon the public to note and blacklist such companies and boycott their services unless they have been publicly cleared by the URA to have paid them. Equally for the corrupt politicians, this is the time to distance them from public funds since they have shown greed and theft to the voters.

The media houses have played their role to expose the dirt within our country and the implementation is our duty. Why should we vote for such heartless people? Why should we support their businesses?

Meanwhile, the Government should think of introducing a compulsory electronic payment system to all traders and companies so that both the Government and consumers can know the exact amount of tax they are paying for the goods or services procured. It is not an expensive venture for the Government to undertake as what is missing is the idea and legislation.

With improvement in technology and competition by telecommunication companies, this is a smart area to venture in.
