A total of 4,201 former soldiers have registered in the districts of Nakapiripirit, Amudat, Moroto, Kotido, Kaabong, Abim, Katakwi and Amuria.

The re-documentation of former servicemen started on April 26 and has been going on across the country.
The army spokesperson, Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye, said the Karamoja region had been completed.

Masindi, Hoima and Kyegegwa in the west were also covered, while Nakaseke, Nakasongola and Luwero were covered under the central region.

However, due to the overwhelming turn-up, officials conducting the exercise have been spending more days in a district than planned, he said.

Kulayigye advised those to be registered in the remaining districts to disregard the dates earlier communicated and wait for new announcements, which, he said, would be made over radio.

“We shall use local radio stations in each district to announce, a day before the registration date. We regret the inconvenience and ask our comrades to continue co-operating with the teams,” Kulayigye said in a press statement.

The Ministry of Defence is registering soldiers, who have served since independence in 1962, to pay them or their widows pension.

The exercise, conducted at district headquarters, is expected to end on June 24.

The Government dismissed allegations that the exercise is a way of maintaining and gaining support ahead of next year’s elections.
