THE Jinja district LC5 chairman, Hannington Basakana, has advised civil servants to ignore pressure from politicians while executing their duties, Charles Kakamwa reports.

Speaking during a meeting at the district council hall on Friday, Basakana noted that some sub-county accountants abuse their offices due to influence from the LC3 chairpersons.

“Maintain a degree of firmness and be ethical. How can a politician, elected on contracts, mislead a technical officer? I don’t want you to land into problems and lose your jobs because of coercion from certain people,” he argued.

He asked leaders to leave a trail for which they can be remembered. The chairman urged technical staff to avoid active involvement in political campaigns during next year’s general elections.

Basakana, an NRM member, also disclosed that he would be leaving his position to contest for a parliamentary seat next year.

He intends to stand against the Government Chief Whip, Daudi Migereko, to whom he lost the Butembe county seat in 2001. The chief administrative officer, Ben Otim Ogwete, who organised the meeting, warned against corruption.

He said some district officials were recently interdicted following a report from the Inspector General of Government.
