Make teaching profession more attractive
IN the 1960s, teaching was one of the best professions that attracted the country’s cream brains. However, things changed in the 1970s during Amin’s regime. The teaching profession has increasingly become less attractive to the youth. It is perceived as a low calibre job and chosen as a last resort.
Although people point fingers at the Government, teachers need to consider themselves the main custodians of their professional dignity. Incidences reported in the media like teachers who defile students, tarnish the image of teaching profession.
The public can only respect the teaching profession if teachers conduct themselves professionally. It is high time teachers guarded their professional image jealously. Teachers’ remuneration has been contentious.
Recently, the Government announced plans to pay teachers in hard-to-reach areas a hardship allowance of sh60,000. Last month, President Yoweri Museveni announced plans to increase teachers’ salaries in the next financial year.
The Government’s efforts and commitment to improving the teachers’ welfare is commendable. However, a lot still needs to be done, especially for the teachers in private schools.
The Government, through the education ministry, has the responsibility of making the teaching profession attractive enough to attract and retain the best brains.
