A SHOP at Koboko Taxi Park for car tyres and lubricants was burnt down on Sunday evening. Francis Olugu, the acting district Police commander (DPC), said the cause of the fire was not yet clear, but a generator being used by the shop owner could have caused a short circuit.

“The region does not have fire fighting equipment. We tried to use fire exitinguishers supplied by several NGOs and well-wishers without much effect. We are lucky a Good Samaritan offered his water tank,” Olugu said.

It took the Police and volunteers about 50 minutes to extinguish the fire that had burnt the house beyond repair. Olugu, who sustained head injuries from falling debris, said one person has been arrested in connection with the fire.

He appealed to the Government to give each region one fire fighting vehicle and train people in fire fighting techniques.
