THE Electoral Commission (EC) has set June 17 as the date for Maracha district’s interim elections. The district returning officer, Richard Onoba, said the elections would be held at Maracha trading centre in Nyadri sub-county, for only LC5 councillors.

Last week, LC5 councillors gave the commission an ultimatum to organise the elections by June 18 or they would hold a peaceful demonstration.

They said the delay in establishing a legitimate administration was causing anxiety among residents. Parliament recently pronounced Maracha county a district and returned Terego to Arua, bringing an end to a five-year row.

The area was initially to be a district comprising Maracha and Terego, which were curved out of Arua in 2005. However, a disagreement over the location of the headquarters and name of the district halted the process.

While residents of Maracha wanted the headquarters at Nyadri sub-county headquarters, those from Terego wanted it at Kubala trading centre.
