THE chairman of the Lango Language Board has urged the Langi to support their language and traditions. Dr. Okello Ogwang made the call during the launch of the Lango dictionary in Lira on Friday.
He accused the Lango community of having a negative attitude towards their language yet other tribes study their languages up to university.

Ogwang said it is easier to teach a child who knows how to read and write the mother language well than one who does not. Lauory Ocen, an author and literature teacher, said the board would soon start writing competitions in schools then later move to adults.

The chief guest, Francis Okello Olwa, regretted that the Lango community was losing morals because there was no written literature about their tradition and culture.

He urged the board to continue with the work. The information minister in the Lango Cultural Foundation, Arnold Bongo Debuni, noted that Lango students in higher institutions of learning do not know how to sing the Lango anthem, in contrast to the Baganda students who know their anthem.
