would like to react strongly to an article in The New Vision, Wednesday July, 21 in which various people expressed their views on the capacity and capability of teaching Kiswahili in Uganda.

I would like to react strongly to an article in The New Vision, Wednesday July, 21 in which various people expressed their views on the capacity and capability of teaching Kiswahili in Uganda.

As a tutor of Kiswahili, I believe Uganda is capable of teaching the language at primary, secondary, tertiary and university levels. We also do not need teachers from Tanzania or Kenya as someone suggested.

The country has a number of personnel to handle the subject at various levels, ranging from certificates to doctorate and is still training more. By the end of next year, we shall have primary school teachers that will be able to teach Kiswahili.

With regards to teaching materials, these are readily available if Ugandans wish to learn the language. The New Vision should carry out a survey in government-aided primary teachers’ colleges and note the number of instructional materials available for Kiswahili.

I am also against the stereotypes of associating Kiswahili with thieves and bad history. That is an old song.
