A joint force of the UPDF and the Police has recovered 673 stolen cattle, donkeys and 20 guns from Karimojong rustlers.

The Third Division commander, Brig. Patrick Kankiriho, on Sunday said 150 suspected culprits are being prosecuted over the theft. Those who were found with guns will be tried by the army court.

Kankiriho said the animals would be used as exhibits in the courts.

A total of 337 animals had been stolen by the Matheniko of Nadunget sub-county in Kotido, while 334 had been grabbed by the Jie from Panyangara sub-county.

The groups, he said, carried out cross-raids and stole each other’s animals.

Kankiriho explained that 234 of the cattle and nine donkeys had been stolen from the Bokora, 40 from the Matheniko and 39 from the Pian.

Among the 337 stolen from Kotido, 262 belonged to the Jie, 63 to the Bokora and 12 to the Pian.
At least 108 Jie and 42 Matheniko have been charged over the raids.

Kankiriho lashed out at the Karimojong MPs who said the UPDF had killed civilians in the operations. He said the MPs are deliberately telling lies for selfish reasons.

Kankiriho said the operation is one of the several phases of the disarmament exercise intended to restore law and order in the region.
