The 14 policemen who were charged with stealing items worth sh150m from a burning trailer in Iganga district have been granted bail three days after the same court had denied them that right.

The cops, who included district Police commander Gaudensio Okumu were again produced in the Iganga Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon together with their wives.

Although they got bail, the suspects ended up spending the night at Iganga district administration prison because the banks had closed, making it impossible to deposit the bail cash.

Okumu had to pay a cash bond of sh300,000, while his co-accused paid sh100,000 each. Their sureties paid a non-cash bond of sh1m each.

Earlier on Friday, Grade I magistrate Eleanor Alinza had refused to grant them bail, arguing that they could interfere with ongoing investigations.

The suspects, who allegedly committed the offence at Namasere village on the night of August 22, had been expected to reappear in court on September 17.

Stolen items that included laptops, chairs, suitcases and clothes were recovered from Iganga Police barracks, nearby villages and in homes of the policemen’s concubines.

The Police officers face a separate charge of failure to protect people’s property as expected of them by their employer (the Government).
