NEBBI town council residents have blamed the authorities over poor waste management.

The residents, mostly hotel and school owners, said some places had become no-go areas because people fear the stench from the garbage heaps.

Kevin Leigh, the Satellite 1 Hotel manager, said they had hired trucks on three occasions to remove the waste dumped near their premises.

“We were forced to hire trucks to ferry the waste for the convenience of our customers. This is because if we leave it, it can stay there for months and we lose customers,” Kevin said.

He noted that there was a likelihood of disease outbreak, especially this rainy season.

Another resident, Nyolonaga, complained that children had made the dumping sites their playing grounds.

“You wonder why they put the garbage collection points near institutions like schools and restaurants,” Nyolonaga said.

Edina Ayomirwoth of Nebbi NGO Forum lamented that the waste had affected their work.

“They take two weeks to collect the waste. By the time they come, it has become unbearable,” he said.

Nebbi Town Clerk Stephen Anecho, admitted that there is irregularity in the garbage collection.

“I must admit that for the last two weeks we have not fully collected the garbage within the town,” he said.

Anecho said the two tractors they use for the task had broken down.
“We are working hard to address the irregularity. We need sh3m to repair the tractors,” he said.
