PART of Kyambogo University’s water supply was disconnected on Thursday over an illegal connection.

This was during operation “Wet Storm” conducted by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to check illegal connections.

Found along Kyambogo Road, the illegally-connected line affects Pearl Hostel, the university library and staff quarters.

NWSC senior security officer Waa Byamukama said: “We need to talk to the university authority and find out how this water was connected,” Byamukama said.

Earlier, while launching operation WET STORM at the NWSC training centre in Bugolobi, the Managing Director, Dr. William Muhairwe, said they had discovered that staff members were involved in the illegal connections.

“Five staff members confessed that they were assisting the public in connecting water illegally and we forgave them. But after the grace period of two weeks, if anybody is caught, they will be handed over to the Police,” he said.

Kyambogo University spokesperson James Bulenzibuto was not available for comment.

NWSC has set up a desk at the Central Police Station in Kampala, where the culprits will be handled.

According to the Water Act of 1995, anybody who makes an illegal connection, removes or bypasses a meter will be charged sh400, 000 plus a charge for water consumed in the previous 24 months.

This time round the penalty will be five years in prison or a fine of sh6m.
