A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for raping an 80-year-old woman.

Badru Wasswa, a resident of Njeru town in Buikwe district, raped the woman on February 24, 2008.

Prosecution told the High Court in Mukono that Wasswa followed the old woman on her way home from a local bar where they had both been drinking waragi.

He took advantage of the woman being drunk and forced her into sex.

The woman made an alarm and her son, Bonifansi Waleba, and a neighbour, Wasswa Kinalwa, came to her rescue.
Court heard that the assailant run away, but Kinalwa and Waleba reported the matter to the area LC1 chairperson, Alozio Kabaseke.

Prosecution said the following day at round 8:00pm, Wasswa returned to the old woman’s house and raped her again.

When the woman made an alarm, Kabaseke, Kinalwa and Waleba, who were hiding nearby, kicked the door open and found Wasswa in the act.
Prosecution added that the woman died two days after the incident.

Wasswa pleaded for leniency, saying he had eight children to take care of.
Passing judgement, Justice Vicent Zehurikize said Wasswa acted irresponsibly, inhumanly and maliciously, and deserved a heavy punishment.
