High fever and temperature

BABY Shalom has never experienced convulsions. But whenever she gets a fever, we keep monitoring her temperature using a thermometer we keep in the first aid box.

How some mothers handle it...

Ruth Tumushabe, mother of one-and-a -half-year old Shalom
BABY Shalom has never experienced convulsions. But whenever she gets a fever, we keep monitoring her temperature using a thermometer we keep in the first aid box. Besides, I remove her clothes and leave her in a light dress. I also sponge her to help bring down the temperature.

Dorah Kankunda, mother of two-year-old Joel
Baby Joel experiences convulsions whenever he gets a fever. The last time he convulsed was about two months ago. I immediately removed his clothes and rushed him to hospital.

He was diagnosed with malaria and given medicine. Even after medication his temperature remained high. But to cool his body I would immerse him in a basin of lukewarm water and gradually the temperature stabilised.

Susan Baguma, mother of four-month-old Bryon
Baby Bryon got high temperature when he had a fever at one month. His temperature rose in the night and I was very scared because I did not expect a one month baby to have fever.

To cool his body, I kept sponging him throughout the night. The next morning I took him to hospital. He was given treatment and the doctors told me the fever had been caused by an infection.

Stella Akello, Mother of two-month-old Nanyonga
When my baby got a temperature, I soaked a cotton cloth and kept sponging her. In addition, I breastfed her frequently to avoid getting dehydrated since she was sweating a lot. Besides, I gave her Panadol syrup that was prescribed by the doctor. It also helped bring down the temperature.
