MARATHON runner Daniel Chepyogen yesterday raced to a new national record, after finishing fifth in the Frankfurt marathon, an IAAF gold label race

Chepyogen, who marks his second year in marathon running, clocked two hours eight minutes and 24 seconds to become the first Ugandan to run below two hours 10 minutes in the 42.198km race. The best time by a Ugandan was Alex Malinga’s 2:12:12 that he clocked at the World championships in Helsinki, when he finished sixth over all.

The runner first appeared on the scene in a road race in 2006 after being convinced by national coach Ronnie Kasirye, then at KIU, that he could earn a living from running.

“It shows that we have the talent and only need to develop it with good training,” said Kasirye, of the athlete who has turned from running barefooted in Kampala road races about four years ago to a national record holder.

Breaking the national record was just a matter of time for the runner, who clocked 2:1:54 in his first marathon in the Standard Chartered bank Nairobi marathon, before clocking 2:17 in the same version in Lumpur marathon. He was the only Ugandan.
