THE Kobs put up an inspired show to win their first Cup in almost 2 years beating rivals Heathens 10-14 to win the 2010 Uganda Cup. Kobs who had gone through one of their most barren spells threw their last dice changing coaches and recalling their semi retired generals.

In came Ronnie Lutakome as head coach together with influential semi retirees Adrian Bukenya and Dr. Tonny Luggya. This coupled with the return of experienced hard-man Victor Wadia from a reduced ban period, Richard Lumu,Simon Wakabi and Allan Masiko from injury provided the younger players with the stability needed to get back to winning ways.

On match day Kob’s tactics worked perfectly as they mentally won the game in the first 20 minutes completely unsettling Heathens. Heathens was never to recover as their game plan and structure completely disintegrated. Kobs kicked deep pinning Heathens in their own half, won the battle at the breakdown, defended resolutely and place kicked accurately. Heathens who were completely surprised by Kobs taking the game to them struggled to find their rhythm and could only give away penalty after penalty as they desperately tried to find their footing. Even Heathen’s chances at the posts went begging as league MVP Benon Kizza and new signing Joel Kimuli missed kickable penalties as the pressure got to them. At the final whistle Kobs extended celebrations showed how much this win meant to them.

An interesting spectacle was to unfold as the vanquished formed a prayer circle with the winners as all players bowed their head’s in prayer. Gestures like that are what make the game of rugby one of it’s kind, when fierce rivals can hug and pray together after a hard game of rugby.

Kobs now boast of a 4th Uganda Cup trophy in their cabinet while Heathens could not add onto their 7 trophies. The highly anticipated Super Cup between the two that is supposed to have taken place today has been postponed to next year and is proposed to be the season curtain raiser.

Heathens trophy count dwindles
Heathens who have looked a pale shadow of themselves since the return of 15s rugby- after a long lay off -have to regroup to defend another trophy in the Makerere 10’s starting on 20th November. Heathens have lost 2 of the trophies they won last year and will be keen prove they have what it takes to retain the Makerere 10s for the 3 year running. So far nothing from Heathens performances in this last quarter has shown they are the invisible team.

Pitch conditions
The location of the Uganda cup finals was fantastic but for a final of that magnitude many felt the pitch conditions denied them an even more entertaining game of rugby were more skill and flair would be on display. There is certainly more room for improvement expected of the facility owners .
