FORMER Mukono district Police commander admitted shooting his wife accidentally, court heard yesterday.
A Police officer, James Adanga, who was formerly attached to Lugazi Police Station, said on April 20, 2008, James Aurien told him that after shooting his wife Christine Apolot, he rushed her to Kawolo Hospital.
Adanga said Aurien also gave him a pistol, which he recorded as an exhibit.
He was one of the five witnesses who yesterday testified before the Mukono High Court where Aurien is being tried for murder.
Adanga said when he learnt that Apolot was dead, he filed a murder case against Aurien. Aurien, 58, was assistant superintendent of Police.
Aurien allegedly shot Apolot through the eye over an extra-marital affairs. Aurien, now on remand in Luzira Prison, denied the charges.
The Director of Public Prosecutions withdrew the murder charges against Aurien during the first trial after the Police failed to trace key witness Hellen Ruth Akello.
Akello, Apolot’s younger sister, lived with the couple and is said to have witnessed the murder. Adanga also said the Lugazi CID boss, Juma Rashid, had put him under pressure to alter his earlier statement against Aurien.
“He asked me to change my statement and say Akello accidentally shot herself yet Aurien told me he accidentally shot his wife,†said Adanga.
Grace Asekenye, Aurien’s sister-in-law, said Apolot told her Aurien had threatened her because she had been seen in a lodge in Kampala with another man.
