THE Deputy Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Ivan Koreta, has warned army officers against joining the current political frenzy.

Instead, he said, the army should be ready to support and protect any democratically elected government come 2011.

“The current politicking in the country should not excite you. Many politicians are moving up and down looking for votes, but you should not be caught up in the political arena,” he said.

Koreta was speaking at the passing out of 40 army officers from Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya at the Uganda People’s Defence Forces Staff College, Kimaka in Jinja on Thursday.

He reminded the army officers about the law that barred them from supporting political candidates.

“The UPDF will not be partisan during the campaign trails,” he added.

At the function, Maj. Paddy Ankunda was rewarded for being the best Ugandan student.

Koreta said the college would soon be accredited to Makerere University such that it can offer diplomas and degrees.

The college’s main objective, he said, was to enhance the officers’ knowledge in the art and science of war and to improve their leadership skills.

The commandant of the college, Maj Gen. Andrew Guti, said the institution was tasked to develop officers who are able to lead units and formations at both tactical and operational levels of war.
